Texas Hold’em Poker – Taking Control with the
Right Bet
Taking control with the right
bet in Texas Hold’em Poker is totally dependent on your
ability to control the table and players effectively. In a
limited game, betting is very structured, and in a no-limit
game there are very few people participating who will be
“controlled” by the bet.
You will need to use all of your
manipulation techniques to anticipate taking control with the
right bet.
Your position at the table makes
a big difference in how you will bet. You have to get opponents
behind you to bet enough to fold before the flop if you are
contemplating taking control with the right bet. Early
positions generally bet more conservatively or bet more to get
players to fold pre-flop.
In taking control with the
right bet it is important to remember also that when
betting and raising, the aggressor is in control of the table.
In an aggressive position, there are some considerations
regarding risk that must be taken.
This may not work as well with an
experienced player who has seen this technique before. However,
there may be some players who will fold pre-flop if the
aggression is seen as a viable threat.
More than anything else when
taking control with the right bet is having the crucial
information necessary to make it work. If the pot is small, and
your opponents fold in pre-flop, your aggressor tactics may
have worked, but you have not won.
The goal is to increase the pot
and to that end you need crucial information about your
opponents. Allowing your opponents to think they are in control
of the table will encourage them to increase their bets and the
pot.
With the right bets at the right
times, based on your knowledge of how the other players will
react, you will be taking control with the right bet
that may not have worked when presented in some other way.
When contemplating taking
control with the right bet it is important to remember what
your goals and limitations are. If you are not in a position to
risk your stack on a bet, then you will need to look at other
options for controlling the table.
You will want to look at how the
players respond to feeler bets and base your large bids on
those reactions. You will also want to calculate the odds for
your pocket cards and take full advantage of their value when
taking control with the right bet.
Sometimes the player in control
of a table is not the person who makes the most checks, raises,
or calls, but rather the person who studies his opponents and
listens to the underlying conversation within the game.
Profitable play combines many
facets of calculation and observation in addition to taking
control with the right bet.
Sometimes the player with the
most control of the table is not someone that would be easily
recognized, but rather the person who is listening, observing,
and proactively encouraging others to increase the pot.
